When Rhona and Roy asked me to plan their honeymoon, they wanted something very special - a blend of relaxation, luxury and adventure after a few challenging years. Together, we created a dream itinerary featuring some of Sri Lanka’s most stunning properties (including a few personal favourites of mine) and unforgettable experiences, ending with the breathtaking beaches of the Seychelles...
When we decided to get married, we knew we wanted to mark the occasion with something truly special. After a few challenging years of ill health, this was our opportunity to create lasting memories with the holiday of a lifetime.
Gillian worked with us to craft an incredible itinerary, blending adventure, luxury and relaxation. From the tea plantations of Sri Lanka to the pristine beaches of the Seychelles, every detail was perfectly planned, allowing us to simply enjoy the journey without a worry.
Our journey began in style with Qatar Airways’ business class – a fantastic experience. From the exceptional lounges to the attentive service, it was far superior to any airline we’d flown before.
Gillian ensured every connection and transfer throughout the trip ran seamlessly. From the sea plane to Castlereagh, offering stunning views over the Sri Lankan highlands, to the helicopter transfer in Seychelles - a childhood dream for me - it all felt like something out of a movie.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka welcomed us with open arms, starting at The Wallawwa, a tranquil retreat surrounded by lush jungle gardens. From there, the adventure truly began...
The long drive from Castlereagh to Yala, though over eight hours, turned out to be a highlight. It gave us a glimpse of local life and Sri Lanka’s rich history, thanks to our wonderful driver, who kept us entertained with stories and folklore.
Ceylon Tea Trails was the star of our stay in Sri Lanka. The bungalows’ intimate scale, beautiful surroundings and outstanding service made it a haven of relaxation.
Whether enjoying breakfast on the lake, learning Sri Lankan cookery, or exploring the walking trails, every moment felt special.
The culinary highlight? The best prawns we’ve ever tasted during lunch at Tea Trails!
Amangalla was another standout. The service was truly next level, anticipating our every need before we even realised it. From the quality handmade gifts at turndown to the cooling lemongrass towels and amazing refreshing pool after a hot walk around the Fort, every detail was perfect. The General Manager even checked in daily to ensure our stay was exceptional.
Special mention must go to our local guide in Sri Lanka, Tyrone Perera. He was outstanding - a true gentleman who made every moment feel special.
The Seychelles
The Seychelles was the perfect way to round off our trip. The “once in a lifetime” helicopter arrival at Constance Lemuria on Praslin set the tone for an incredible stay.
While the hotel was larger than we’d normally choose, the service was excellent, and the facilities were fantastic. Our junior suite was well-appointed, but the real highlight was the natural beauty surrounding us.
Walking across the golf course to Anse Georgette beach was like stepping into a postcard. Another favourite was the day trip to La Digue, where we hired bicycles and explored the laid-back island - absolute bliss.
The sunsets at Lemuria were breathtaking every evening, and we savoured every moment, knowing we’d never forget them. While the Seychelles felt less intimate than Sri Lanka, its harmony with nature left a lasting impression.
Reflections
Looking back, the whole trip was magical. Sri Lanka’s warmth, vibrant culture and exceptional service contrasted beautifully with the Seychelles’ stunning beaches and tranquil atmosphere.
The Sri Lankan food was outstanding everywhere we went, from the curries to the egg hoppers at breakfast.
The Sri Lankan people were simply delightful - so warm and welcoming. In contrast, the Seychelles captured my heart with its perfect beaches and serene beauty.
We were fortunate with the weather, experiencing only a few downpours. Sri Lanka was hot and humid, while the Seychelles had a drier heat with a refreshing breeze.
Leaving Sri Lanka was emotional because we felt we’d made a friend in Tyrone. And as for the Seychelles? I was gutted to leave - it’s my happy place.
Gillian’s expertise and attention to detail made all the difference. From thoughtful touches like room upgrades and honeymoon picnics to the peace of mind knowing she was just a message away, the entire trip felt effortless. Every transfer, every stay, every activity - it was all flawlessly coordinated.
Would we do it again? In a heartbeat. The memories we’ve made will stay with us forever, and we’re already dreaming of our next adventure.
