Gill’s Blog: Hotels that do good – Attitude in Mauritius

In a world where sustainability is often more buzzword than practice, how refreshing to find a hotel chain that’s truly walking the walk. Enter Attitude Hotels in Mauritius - a group of eight 3* and 4* properties that are not only great for your holiday but also for the local community, economy and environment.

I first discovered Attitude Hotels a few years back during visits to their stunning 4* properties: The Ravenala Attitude on the west coast and Zilwa Attitude, perched idyllically on a lagoon facing the north islands.

Both hotels impressed me with their family-friendly atmosphere and value-packed offerings.

Since then, I’ve booked clients here, all of whom have come back with glowing reviews.

Of course, the beautiful beaches, bluer-than-blue pools and dine-around options are reason enough to choose Attitude for your Mauritius getaway. But what really sets them apart is their deep commitment to making a positive impact on the island.

From the reusable Dopper water bottles loaned to guests, to rooms furnished with locally made crafts, Attitude is a shining example of how to do tourism right.

There is no single-use plastic in the guest experience, so if you want coffee, tea, sugar and snacks for your room, you can visit the Bulk Shop and stock up using the reusable glass jars.

Fresh fruit and salad are grown by the local Mayaven family, local bands are given the spotlight to perform, and the spa uses 100% natural ingredients that are grown locally in the island’s lush La Vallée de Ferney.

For the eco-conscious traveller, the Marine Discovery Centre at Lagoon Attitude staffed by marine biologists is a must-visit. Here, you can learn about the island’s marine life and even contribute to important research projects, such as photographing humpback whales on a sustainable whale-watching trip. I’d also recommend booking a kayaking tour through the mangroves, following their snorkelling trail and joining one of their upcycling art classes!

Otentik Experiences

One of the most remarkable aspects of Attitude Hotels is their Otentik (authentic) experience programme, which allows guests to engage with the local culture and environment in meaningful ways. Every activity is designed to connect you more deeply with the heart of Mauritius.

My two favourites are...

Otentik Dinner

Have dinner with a local family - help prepare the food, get to know the island from those who know it best and there may be some dancing or live music involved, too!

Otentik Discovery

Explore the street food scene in Port Louis. Attitude Hotels has its own app, helping you follow the team’s self-guided walking and cycling tours. I highly recommend the walking tour of Port Louis to taste the best street food and see the cool street art.

The Attitude Hotels

Each of the eight Attitude Hotels offers something unique, but here are two of my personal favourites:

The Ravenala Attitude

Tucked away on the northwest coast in Balaclava, The Ravenala Attitude is a tribute to tropical living. The name ‘Ravenala’ refers to the traveller's tree (or traveller’s palm) – easily spotted thanks to its fabulous, fan-shaped collection of long leaves.

Surrounded by lush gardens and the serene Turtle Bay, this all-suite hotel is perfect for families and couples alike, with pools, a great beach and a wide range of activities, including a kids' club and a fitness trail alongside the river. It is also within easy reach of Port Louis.

With nine diverse restaurants, including two adults-only options, there’s something for every palate. Whether you’re craving the laid-back vibes of the Beach Bar or the exotic flavours of Madame Ming’s, The Ravenala Attitude has it all.

Sunrise Attitude

For those seeking a peaceful, adults-only retreat, Sunrise Attitude on the wild east coast is a dream come true. Located across from the breathtaking Belle Mare beach, this hotel is all about reconnecting with nature and yourself.

In harmony with the surrounding nature, the hotel décor features shades of leafy green, earthy terracotta and mustard, with a Mauritian architecture style of natural materials.

With its no-TV concept, swim-up rooms and private villas with pools, Sunrise Attitude offers a tranquil escape that’s perfect for honeymooners or anyone looking to unwind.

A dedication to relaxation and reconnection is what it’s about here - taking care of yourself by taking time to appreciate every moment.

Stay at Sunrise Attitude and welcome the dawn on the beach. Headphones on, the DJ will guide you through soft music, which intensifies with the sun. Dance, chill or just soak up the feeling of nature’s energy!

Tasty dishes and authentic street food are offered, including a wide range of vegan options, served in an enchanting environment from covered market-style Mauritian restaurants to relaxing spaces on the way back from the beach.

Attitude Hotels are expanding their horizons, with a new property set to open in Zanzibar in 2025. I’ll be keeping a close eye on this exciting development and will share more news as it comes.

If you’re curious about Attitude Hotels or planning your next trip to Mauritius, don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’d love to help you experience the magic of Attitude for yourself.
